“The afternoon and Saturday schools play a pivotal role in the teaching of languages other than English and deserve both our congratulations and support” said the Minister for Education & Training of NSW, Hon. Carmel Tebbutt during a short visit at the offices of the NSW Federation of Community Languages Schools, at the Marrickville West Public School.

Minister Tebutt has been an advocate for the teaching of languages at all levels of educational institutions, however she ruled out an increase of the per capita funding due to lack of funds.

The member for Marrickville expressed the wish to have “a bottomless pit to draw funds” and bring the per capita funding to the same level as other States, however this is not possible. It should be noted that other States contribute $110 to $120 per student who are learning another language at afternoon and Saturday schools. In NSW the per capita funding is $60.

The Minister added that officers from the Department are examining the Federation’s request to create or enhance a Memorandum of Understanding with the Principals of various State schools that accommodate community language schools to establish a smoother and more cooperative approach to the usage of the buildings and other facilities.

“The Federation has also revitalised itself, primarily by the efforts of its current President Mr. Albert Vella, the support provided by the Community Relations Commissioner Mr. Christodoulou, who is overseeing the Federation’s operations, and the funding for a position at the Federation to provide secretarial and educational support” said the Minister for Education.
